What Causes Arthritis?
According to Ayurveda, as we grow older, especially after the age
of 40, the vata dosha (air element in the body)
increases in all of us. When vata becomes blocked
or ‘stuffed’ into our joints, it can be painful –
bringing stiffness and swelling.

According to Ayurveda, arthritis begins when a person suffers from
a combination of excess vata, weak agni (digestive power) and
finally, excess aama (toxins that lodge in the body over time because
of poor diet, chemical exposure, lack of exercise and unhealthy
lifestyle). Excess vata moves the aama (toxins) and pitta (fire
element) from the colon, depositing them in the joints.
The combination of aama and pitta
produce swelling.Toxins in the joints may cause pain or a burning
sensation. There may also be a burning sensation because excess
vata actually dries out the mucus membranes that
normally prevent your joints from rubbing when you move. When
the joints rub, you may even hear them crack and creak — always
a tell-tale sign of excess vata. Eventually, vata
can cause joint deformity, which is why many Ayurvedic remedies
for arthritis are focused on reducing vata, the air
element.
Helpful Tips for
Resolving Arthritis
and Joint Problems

1. On a daily basis, cook with ginger, garlic, cumin,
asafoetida (only use a pinch), clove, cinnamon, celery seed, thyme
and oregano.
2. Cook with vata pacifying oils: olive
oil, sesame oil, safflower and ghee (clarified butter available in
health food stores).
3. Take 1 teaspoon. castor oil every other evening
before bedtime especially after the age of 50 to help eliminate
toxins. If you already experience joint trouble, you can try it
daily.
4. Avoid or limit vata aggravating foods
such as black, pinto and garbonzo beans, as well as wheat, fried
food, and raw vegetables. Replace raw vegetables with fresh juice
made from salads, vegetables and fruits.
5. Avoid red meat and tomatoes, which lead to the
build-up of toxins and contribute to swelling and inflammation.
6. Give yourself a regular massage with sesame oil
followed by steam or a hot shower at least once a week. If you
can make time to make this a daily routine, even better.
7. Diet is all-important! It’s best to eat a vata
pacifying diet. This diet reduces vata
as well as aama and also nourishes the bones with calcium.
8. Take at least 2 tablespoons of sesame seeds in the form
of tahini or crushed sesame powder per day to fulfill your
daily calcium requirement.
9. If you do have symptoms of aama (toxicity),
fasting on mung bean soup for three to five days
will help.
10. Make an intention and take steps to reduce lifestyle
factors that contribute to the onset of arthritis, including
overexertion, frequent late nights and excessive worries.
